December 12, 2009 Saturday
Sorry for the delay in updates, we have been quite busy with work, doctor appointments and preparation for the holidays and new baby. Oliver has had two clinic visits since the last post, one on November 30 and one yesterday, December 11. On the November 30 visit Oliver received IV VCR and methotrexate via IV and a spinal injection/tap. Almost of all of Oliver's counts were "normal" at the November 30 visit - with "normal" meaning almost what you would expect for a healthy child without cancer - the doctors were very impressed. On November 30 -Oliver's ANC was 2600 - the highest, I believe, since we have started chemotherepy. Yesterday, December 11, Oliver received IV VCR and methotrexate and his last H1N1 flu shot. His counts were still good for his condition -ANC was 1200 with a couple other areas low compared to children without cancer, but no reason for concern by doctors as we know and expect them to be lower in certain areas from the chemotherepy. Oliver's energy continues to surprise us as he seems to have more energy then most kids, he certainly has more energy than I do. His spirits still remain high and while the clinic visits drain us all, he recovers relatively quickly from them. Oliver also had an echocardiogram yesterday as the doctors explained is necessary before continuing with the next phase of chemo - delayed intensification -which we are warned will be intense, hence the name. We will know the results of this test on Monday. Oliver is scheduled for another spinal tap on December 28 and we start delayed intensification chemo drugs on our December 31 clinic visit. Oliver's teacher from his montessori has been kind and generous enough to drop by weekly to continue lessons and Oliver seems to be excelling in mathematics. He also loves building different objects with his legos so who knows, maybe future engineer?? Whatever he decides to do, we will simply be happy when he is deemed to be cancer free with no chemo. I will try to update before Christmas, but in the event that I do not, Merry Christmas and Happy Holdiays to everyone. Thank you so much for your continued prayers and support - you have helped us more than you can imagine.
